MW (Mud Weight): Mud density in pounds per gallon (ppg).

TVD: True Vertical Depth.

0.052 is a constant used in the hydrostatic pressure formula to convert mud weight and depth into pressure (psi).

It combines several unit conversions and constants:

• Gravity (32.174 ft/s²)
• Conversion from ppg to lb/ft³
• Unit conversion to psi

It’s a shortcut — so when you input MW in ppg and TVD in feet, you get P in psi.

Hydrostatic pressure is the downward force from the fluid column inside the well. It’s what holds formation fluids back and keeps the well under control.

Too little pressure = influx or blowout.
Too much = formation fracture or losses.

Formula: P = 0.052 × Mud Weight × TVD

Imagine a clear glass of water in front of you:

• The pressure at the top is minimal — it’s open to air.
• But the deeper you go, the heavier the water above you becomes.
• At the very bottom, the water is pressing down — that’s hydrostatic pressure.

Now scale that to a well: a 10,000 ft column of drilling fluid creates immense pressure at the bottom. That pressure is what keeps unwanted fluids out.
